Claim that Sanusi was unreachable untrue, says Hamzah

The former home minister said the allegation did not make sense and found it odd that the police were unable to contact Sanusi.

KUALA LUMPUR: The claim by the police that caretaker Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor was unreachable ahead of his court case is untrue, said opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

The former home minister said the allegation did not make sense and found it odd that the police were unable to contact Sanusi.

“What is the rationale of arresting Sanusi at 3am? He had extended his cooperation to the police and even agreed to appear in court the next day.

“They (the police) could have just asked Sanusi’s bodyguard of his whereabouts at any time,” he said in a video posted on his Facebook page last night.

He was charged under Section 4(1)(a) of the Sedition Act which carries a maximum penalty of three years’ jail and RM5,000 fine.

Sanusi, during a PN ceramah in Selayang, was reported to have belittled Amirudin’s appointment by the Sultan of Selangor.

Sanusi also drew comparisons between the Sultan of Kedah (Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah) and the Sultan of Selangor, saying Sultan Sharafuddin’s choice was “cokia” (substandard).

The Selangor Royal Office issued a statement saying that Sanusi’s remark in one of the ceramah held in Selangor recently was considered an insult to the Selangor Royal Institution.

Sanusi later sent a warkah (letter) to Sultan Sharafuddin to explain his remarks and also apologised to the Malay ruler.

Police received 57 police reports against Sanusi as of Sunday over his speech.  NST

Doesn’t make sense, Sanusi’s bodyguard is a cop – Hamzah

Parliamentary opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin has disputed official accounts of why caretaker Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor had to be arrested at 3am yesterday.

In a video posted on Hamzah’s Facebook page, he said Sanusi was always accompanied by a bodyguard who is a police personnel.

“Isn’t it strange that the police said they cannot reach Sanusi? It does not make sense because the police have one of their personnel serving the menteri besar as a bodyguard.

“The police could have asked the bodyguard and found out where he was at any time,” said Hamzah.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the police had made numerous attempts to reach Sanusi and his officers to inform Sanusi of his court appearance slated for 9am yesterday but were unsuccessful.

Eventually, the police had to detain Sanusi at 3am at an apartment in Kuala Lumpur to ensure his appearance in court to be charged with two counts of sedition.

Hamzah opined that there were likely instructions for the police to arrest Sanusi in the middle of the night to embarrass him because he was a prominent Perikatan Nasional leader.

He then insinuated that a “prominent government leader” had once been convicted of abuse of power before for personal gain.

“I’m not making accusations. I’m saying this can happen and it has happened before. It is not impossible for this to happen again,” he said.

In 1999, Anwar Ibrahim was convicted of abuse of power for ordering the police to harass two alleged witnesses. Anwar, the current prime minister, was handed a six-year sentence. In 2018, he secured a pardon for this and other cases. MKINI
