Following a “misunderstanding” over its float parade last week, the Kelantan government has been asked to hold a second parade featuring the official cars of top leaders.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Kelantan Amanah Youth chief Hazmi Hassan sarcastically proposed that the 14 Mercedes Benz cars belonging to Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob and other state executive councillors (exco) be used.
The state government previously came under fire for the extravagant expense.
“I read media reports of the Kelantan tourism exco apologising for the misunderstanding over the float parade organised during the recent launch of Visit Kelantan Year 2020.
“I propose that the parade be held, it would be even better if we could have a parade featuring decorated Mercedes Benz,” he said.
Not only would the rakyat be able to marvel at the taxpayer-funded German vehicles, Hazmi calculated that the parade would not cost much.
“I hope the state government will be able to hold the show as I’m sure the people will use the opportunity to take a close look at their leader’s cars.
“It won’t cost a lot because they will only need to use the exco’s official cars, which have already been purchased. They will just need to decorate them.
“This will be able to cure the disappointment faced by the thousands of visitors who attended the Visit Kelantan Year 2020 launch,” he said.
Visit Kelantan Year 2020 was launched last Saturday with a short float parade featuring 10 cars representing each district.
However, road closures ahead of the event had led people to anticipate a large-scale parade that would travel from the launch venue, a stadium, out onto the roads.
Many allegedly showed up to watch the parade but were disappointed when they saw no floats.
Netizens later took to social media to express their dissatisfaction over the event. – MKINI
‘Why new cars when Johor gov’t is short of cash to help people?’
“I am a Pakatan Harapan government MP who wants to ask the Johor Menteri Besar (Dr Sahruddin Jamal) of the Harapan coalition a question.
“Is it true what the Johor opposition social media is claiming – that the Johor state government has bought new Toyota Camry vehicles for the menteri besar and his exco?” he said in a statement.
Hassan was referring to a photograph disseminated by Ops Johor on its Facebook page showing new vehicles bearing JDT number plates.
“I attended the Johor MB’s briefing for Johor parliamentarians and assemblypersons on Jan 9, 2020 in Kota Iskandar on the land tax increase in Johor beginning Jan 1, 2020.”
He said the Johor MB informed them that the main reason for raising the land tax is because the state government lacks money for development for the benefit of the people.
“What is the reason for the purchase of new cars for the MB and exco while the people are still complaining and angry at the increase in land taxes that has been rising so dramatically?” asked Hassan, a former Johor PKR chief.
He asked just who was benefitting from this “development”.
Hassan’s statement comes just weeks after the PAS-led Kelantan state government came under heavy fire for the purchase of luxury vehicles for the use of its leadership.
