And once again, our harbouring of Indian preacher Zakir Naik has come to bite us.
After all, how can we claim that a country is being unfair by giving Low asylum when that is exactly what we are doing ourselves!
How can we demand that Cyprus revoke Low’s passport, when we granted Zakir Naik permanent residence without batting an eye!
Malaysians have been complaining about Mahathir granting Zakir Naik a safe haven for years now. The Indian preacher is on the list of the most wanted men in India. He has been accused of inciting terrorism and money laundering…two serious crimes. Yet, Mahathir has refused to extradite him since he believes Naik will not receive a “fair trial” in Malaysia.
And how has Zakir Naik thanked Malaysia for their seemingly unconditional protection? By insulting the minorities in our country when ever he has the chance. By questioning Malaysian Indians loyalty and calling Malaysian Chinese “guests” of the country.
Now let’s look at the case of Jho Low: the government and chief of police are having a tantrum now that they found out that Low was granted asylum by an unnamed country, and that Low maintains a Cypriot passport…But how different is this from the Naik case?
Low has a leg to stand on when he claims that he is being politically persecuted and may not face a fair trial, and the Malaysian government is only adding to his case. The media advisor to Prime Minister Mahathir just stated ““So let’s do a Mossad and get our hands on him…dig him out of the worm hole, as promised, and bring him back to Malaysia kicking and screaming.”
Kadir, those words do not hint at Low receiving a fair trial…. on the contrary.
Unlike Zakir Naik, who has done nothing but cause trouble in Malaysia, it has been reported that Low contributed significantly to the Cyprus economy before receiving a passport.
In essence, Malaysians want Low back to face a trial, but as long as they are still harbouring Zakir Naik, they have no leg to stand on.
