PETALING JAYA – Barisan Nasional (BN) will not be presenting an alternative budget this year, in a break from the tradition of opposition budgets.
Usually, the federal opposition will present its budget before the finance minister tables Putrajaya’s, but MCA president Wee Ka Siong says this year, BN is not presenting one.
Last year, Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin, who holds the finance portfolio in the opposition’s shadow Cabinet, unveiled BN’s alternative budget a day before the government tabled theirs in the Dewan Rakyat.
“We are not presenting an alternative budget like last year,” Wee told FMT.
However, FMT understands that BN MPs will meet on Sunday to discuss in detail Budget 2020 which Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng is tabling on Friday.
Last year, as part of its “People’s Economy Initiative”, BN proposed the return of the goods and services tax but at a lower rate.
