PERAK speaker Ngeh Koo Ham has shot down a motion by the state government to debate the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
According to Malay-language daily Sinar Harian, the motion was brought by Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu.
The paper said Ngeh also rejected a similar motion by Ahmad Saidi Mohamad Daud (BN-Changkat Jering) as it was a matter came under the federal government’s purview.
“Matters pertaining to international conventions and international bodies are the jurisdiction of the federal government.
The motion came ahead of a planned rally on Saturday to protest ICERD.
Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah) is the organiser of the rally, which is supported by PAS and Umno.
The rally will be held at Dataran Merdeka, and the opposition parties had said they were aiming for a 500,000-strong attendance.
