KUALA LUMPUR -Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad can only repeat his past mistakes if he is given the chance to become prime minister again, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi asserted today.
Zahid who is also Umno acting deputy president, sarcastically congratulated the federal Opposition alliance for its choice, and warned that it risked recycling the same mistakes committed during the over two-decade Mahathir administration if it was elected to power.
“The resolution is very good and well-placed. The leader has done a lot for the country for 22 years. If he is given the chance again, the past mistakes made before will be repeated again,” he said at a news conference after launching a convention here, referring to Dr Mahathir.
He added that the choice also showed that a lack of “worthy’ leaders in PH “other than a leader who has contributed greatly to the country” but who he asserted is bent on “destroying the nation” with his style of leadership.
Zahid was responding to the PH leaders’ endorsement of Dr Mahathir as their choice for prime minister if they win the 14th general elections due by August.
The leaders agreed that Dr Mahathir will only warm the seat for PKR’s de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who is currently in jail for sodomy and scheduled to be released in June, if the latter receives a royal pardon.
At its convention, the PH leaders also agreed to allocate the bulk of electoral seats to be contested — 52 — to Dr Mahathir’s party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia; while 51 seats are to go to PKR, 35 seats to DAP and 27 seats to Parti Amanah Negara.
