Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has appealed to Pekan voters to “save the country” by ousting their longtime MP Najib Abdul Razak in the next general election.
In a video message to Pekan voters uploaded to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) Facebook page, he said Najib had acted differently from his father after he became prime minister.
“I am of the view that Pekan is the most important constituency in the next general election, because its representative has unexpectedly become someone who has done despicable acts which have been detrimental to the country.
“He is accused of stealing the money… and now he is coming out with policies that are detrimental to the country,” said the Bersatu chairperson.
“He is the son of Abdul Razak, my icon who supported me to become a prime minister and that’s why I supported Najib as a prime minister. However, his behaviour and actions were very much different from his father.”
Mahathir said all his advice to Najib had fallen on deaf ears, and that it was “business as usual” for the latter.
He reminded Pekan voters that they have the power to end Najib’s reign, citing how the latter suffered a major setback in 1999 when he was narrowly re-elected by a 241-vote majority.
“Pekan voters now have a chance to save the country by defeating Najib… Support any party that stands against Najib and let’s fight to topple him,” he said.
