IPOH – The debate between former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz may not take place as police have not received any formal application to hold the event.
Acting Perak police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan (pix) said no one had applied for permission to hold the debate at MRSM Sultan Azlan Shah in Kuala Kangsar on March 25.
“This is a stern warning, holding the debate without police permission will make it an illegal gathering.
“It is an offence under the Peaceful Assembly Act.
“If the debate is to be held, the police can take action against anyone for gathering at a prohibited place, and without permission under Section 9(5) of the Act,” he said in a statement Thursday.
He added that such a gathering is not allowed in schools as stated in the first schedule in Section 3 of the Act.
DCP Hasnan said it is the duty of the police to ensure public safety and peace.
“We are again reminding and warning that action, in accordance with the law, will be taken against those found to be involved in the debate,” he said.
