AHMAD ZAHID HAMIDI should be investigated for sedition as he too used the race card against Dr Mahathir Mohamad, social media users said.
This comes after the Selangor Royal Court called for the former prime minister to be investigated for sedition, for allegedly inciting hatred towards those of Bugis descent.
Social media users said three months ago Zahid had accused Dr Mahathir of having Indian parentage and using the Malay community and Umno to further his political career.
Details on Dr Mahathir’s parentage and snapshots of his old identity card had gone viral on social media sites and messaging apps.
In his tirade against Prime Minister Najib Razak, Dr Mahathir, had allegedly said Najib’s ancestors were “Bugis pirates”.
Malaysians like Aubrey Tan and Ashok Pattu took to Facebook and asked when Zahid would be called for questioning.
“How about probing DPM (deputy prime minister Zahid) too for playing on Dr Mahathir’s race and ancestral for political mileage?” Tan commented.
“DPM started it when he dragged TDM (Tun Dr Mahathir) ancestors. He should be probed too,” Ashok said.
Other Facebook users said Red Shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos should also be hauled up for sedition.
“Why is the offensive racism from ministers not probed for sedition and how about the decorated Jamal? (Md Yunos)” Kenny Chung commented.
“How about Jamal?” KL Leong Tan asked.
Selangor Royal Court secretary Hanafisah Jais said Dr Mahathir had appeared to incite Malaysians to hate, degrade and view the Bugis community with contempt.
“Members of the Royal Court feel (Dr Mahathir’s) speech was extremely excessive, and can spark hatred and feelings of ill will towards the Bugis community, to the point of causing chaos and disharmony,” said the statement.
“The verbal attacks have indirectly demeaned the history and heritage of the Selangor sultanate, which is descended from the Bugis.
“The Royal Court feels an investigation and a legal case be brought against Dr Mahathir under the Sedition Act 1948 or under any other relevant laws.”
Samuel George said Umno politicians have spoken ill about the Chinese and Indians in the past, but no one was hauled up.
“There are many crooks in Selangor, Your Royal Highness … so many politicians, ustaz, ulama and mufti are playing racial and religious issues,” KP Soh Soh said.
The Selangor Royal Court said a video clip of the speech clearly showed Dr Mahathir had vilified and lumped the Bugis community together with pirates, criminals and robbers.
