THE Pakatan Harapan roadshow on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal got off to a rough start after banners announcing the event in Penaga, Penang, were mysteriously taken down last night.
Penang DAP vice-chairman Zairil Khir Johari alleged it was an act of sabotage by unknown parties.
“The banners and party flags were put up earlier this week but they were taken down last night.
“Not a single flag was left. We don’t know who exactly took them down,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Zairil said they will try to put up new banners and flags immediately.
The ceramah, scheduled for 9pm today, will launch PH’s nationwide roadshow to explain the intricacies of the 1MDB scandal and how it affects Malaysians to rural Malays.
Speakers will explain the US Department of Justice civil suits which alleges that money was stolen from 1MDB to buy assets like a US$27 million (RM117 million) 22-carat pink diamond necklace for the wife of “Malaysian Official 1”.
Cabinet minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan had previously confirmed that MO1 was Prime Minister Najib Razak.
This is the first ceramah organised by Penang DAP in a rural Malay area.
A visit by The Malaysian Insight to the town in Kepala Batas found it the mood rather quiet near the event venue of Dewan JKKK Penaga.
There were no flags of PH parties or banners of the event with the theme “Sayangi Malaysia, Hapuskan Kleptokrasi” (Love Malaysia, Destroy Kleptocracy).
The locals were unsure if the ceramah would go on as planned. Some did not even know of the event.
“I am hearing this for the first time from you,” Zaidi Idris, 57, told The Malaysian Insight when asked if he was interested to go to the event tonight.
“I would be interested in going to listen about the 1MDB scandal but I didn’t know there was a ceramah on it tonight. I have not seen any banners.”
Shopkeeper Zuraidah Ahmad, 42, said she, too, was keen on going to the ceramah, but she also had not seen any signs of the event.
Another Penaga resident, who wished to be known as Mohamad, 41, said he had heard of the 1MDB ceramah, but he was not sure it was still on as it was so quiet.
“I may go and listen tonight if it is on. I go to ceramah by both BN and PH to hear what both sides have to say.
“On 1MDB, people generally don’t know what to believe because one side denies wrongdoing while the other side says the opposite,” he said. –
