THE POISON OF NAJIBNOMICS SPREADS: GIANT EMPLOYEES SAY RECEIVED ONLY ONE-WEEK NOTICE ABOUT CLOSURE

KUALA LUMPUR – Two staff from the Giant hypermarket in Shah Alam, Selangor alleged that they were only informed about the closure of their workplace a week ago, according to news portal Free Malaysia Today.

The employees at one of the chain hypermarket’s five outlets here that will cease operations from Sunday, said they were given an option to either receive a compensation or work at another branch.

“But it all depends on whether there are vacancies there too,” an unnamed staff at the hypermarket’s branch in Shah Alam City Centre (SACC) Mall was quoted as saying.

“The branch will be closed on November 5 but we will still be working until stocks are cleared which might take about a month,” she added.

Another worker referred to as Mariam claimed staff were told that the reason for the closure of five Giant hypermarket outlets, including the one that they were working in, was only because the lease was expiring soon.

GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd recently said the decision to shutter five of its branches was made after it had “reviewed its operations to improve efficiencies and productivity”.

News of the closure of five Giant hypermarkets, in Sri Manjung, Perak; Sungai Petani, Kedah; SACC and Selayang Lama in Selangor; and Sibu, Sarawak went viral on social media recently, with many people linking it to the state of the country’s economy.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin later rebutted such allegations, saying the decision was made by the owner of the supermarket as part of the business strategies to tackle problems with the leases of these premises.

He also noted that it was “part of their downsizing business strategy”.
