KUALA LUMPUR – Former international Khalid Ali believes that AirAsia Berhad’s Group chief executive officer, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, is ‘Superman’, or rather the most suitable candidate to helm the FA of Malaysia (FAM) if current president Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim really wants to leave.

“Tunku Ismail is like Captain America and it is very difficult for him to carry out drastic changes in such a short span of time. If it is indeed true that Tunku Ismail wants to walk away from FAM, then I see no better person who is qualified to replace him other than Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

“Based on experience and credibility that he has, I see Tony Fernandes as the most suitable person for the job. He has vast experience in business and also running and managing a football club,” he said when contacted earlier today.

Through a video shown on the Johor Southern Tigers (JST) official Facebook page, Tunku Ismail who is also the owner of Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) admitted he is contemplating leaving his top post with FAM because he doesn’t see himself staying long with the national footballing body.

After successfully sourcing for funds for competing teams, reorganising FAM’s structure and doing what he felt was best for the national team, Tunku Ismail said he hopes the national footballing body can get their very own ‘Superman’ as their new president.

Tunku Ismail hinted that he could let go of his top post either this year or the next.

However, Khalid still harbours hope that Tunku Ismail will stay to lead FAM and help to improve and elevate the level of Malaysian football.

“I hope Tunku Ismail does not leave and stays on to do what he set out to do which is to bring positive changes to Malaysian football. But spare a thought for a second and just imagine if Captain America and Superman joined forces, it would definitely do wonders for Malaysian football,” he said.
