A rumour is spreading that Umno-splinter group Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has found a candidate to take on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in Pekan.
The candidate? None other than megastar Siti Nurhaliza.
Or so some would like to believe. Bersatu, however, says it is not true.
“Fake news,” Bersatu strategist Rais Hussin told Malaysiakini in a text message.
He was responding to an election style poster featuring Siti Nurhaliza as a Bersatu candidate for the Pekan parliament seat.
Sin Chew Daily reports that Siti Nurhaliza’s manager had “no comment” when asked about the poster.
It would not have been the first time a pop singer has been fielded by the opposition in elections.
In the 2013 polls, PAS fielded pop-singer Aishah in the Jempol parliament seat.
While Siti Nurhaliza may not be a Bersatu candidate, the music icon has expressed views in the past that were deemed to be in support of Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is now the party chairperson.
