KUALA LUMPUR – Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai was ejected from the Dewan Rakyat after refusing to sit down following a shouting match.
Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk J. Loga Bala Mohan had just begun his winding up speech at the committee stage for Budget 2018 debates when he took a swipe at Tan for cronyism, claiming there were many illegal gambling dens in Cheras using his name.
The DAP lawmaker took offence and stood up to demand that Loga Bala retract his statement, and challenged him to repeat his allegations outside the House.
Loga Bala responded by saying he was answering to a question raised in Dewan, and the claim he made was not his opinion, rather it was “what people were saying outside”.
Tan had to retract the statement after repeated orders to do so by Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia, who said it was unparliamentary to make such accusations as it showed ill intentions.
After Loga Bala made his statement, a few Opposition MPs stood up to say that since Tan had to retract his words earlier, it was only fair for the Deputy Minister to do the same.
Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee ordered Loga Bala to apologise and retract his remark.
However, Loga Bala explained that he was not accusing Tan.
“If I did, I would apologise, but in this situation I did not accuse him, I was merely referring to what was being said outside,” he said.
Kiandee accepted the explanation and then ordered Tan to sit down, but the latter refused to do so.
“I will not sit down until he retracts the statement,” said Tan, despite repeated orders to sit.
Eventually, Kiandee ordered him to leave the Dewan.
