PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli has predicted that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak may call for the general election latest by July.

He claimed that Najib has “run out of cards” with regard to the motion to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355) being tabled in the Dewan Rakyat this morning.

The Pandan lawmaker claimed that both Najib and Hadi hoped for Pakatan Harapan to split over this matter, but pointed out that the opposition coalition had reached a consensus on how to handle it.

“The longer this drama is played to the Malay public, PAS and Umno will lose more votes from the fence sitters as more and more people will realise this is just political play instead of a sincere effort.

“The fact that Najib chose to play today, that is not without risk. We could feel that Sabah and Sarawak (BN) as well as BN’s non-Malay component parties were not happy.

“There is a limit they can play between PAS and Umno, because they also need to answer to their constituents.

As such, Rafizi expected Najib to call for the election before the next Parliament sitting, which starts on July 24.

Rafizi said Najib had made the next election a three-cornered fight between BN, PAS and Harapan.

He added that the opposition will explain to voters that the Act 355 amendments had been turned into BN’s political game.
