ALOR SETAR – Police have busted an online gambling operation advertised via the ‘WeChat’ social application with the arrest of five men in Sungai Petani, yesterday.

Kedah CID chief, SAC Mohd Nashir Ya said the men, aged 17 to 30 years, were nabbed in a raid at 8pm on a house in Taman Sutera Idaman, which they had been using to carry out their illegal activity since two months ago.

“They advertised their activity using the ‘WeChat’ application. Customers could choose four website addresses, namely SCR888, GW99, ROLLEX11 and 3WIN.

“Customers were then given bank accounts for making payments and given identifications and passwords to begin gambling on the websites,” he told a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters, here, today.

Mohd Nashir said the preliminary investigation found that the gambling activity garnered RM2,000 in bets daily and the clients included those from Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh.

“One of those arrested has a past record. We also seized 22 cellphones, laptops (two), computers (three), modem (one), router (one) and a company file containing information on betting transactions,” he said.

All the suspects were being remanded for five days from today and the case was being investigated under Section 1(1)(c) Betting Act 1953, he added. — Bernama
