KUALA LUMPUR – Umno Youth will not stop its members from joining the “Act 355 rally”, slated to be held in the city this Saturday.
Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan Harun said the wing has no power to bar members from taking part in the rally, which was aimed to show support to PAS’ controversial proposal to enhance syariah courts’ penalties via parliamentary process.
Khairul Azwan however remained non-committal when asked whether the wing is openly supporting the rally despite the fact that it had drawn criticisms from among Barisan Nasional component parties.
“The answer is there is no objection. We won’t bar anyone from going or attending the rally,” he said.
“We are leaving it to the conscience of our members. It is up to them,” he told reporters after attending the wing’s exco meeting at Menara Dato Onn here.
The rally, organised by PAS and several other non-governmental organisations, seeks to show support to the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, or commonly known as Act 355.
Asked whether the party leadership had given the green light for Umno Youth members to join the rally, Khairul Azwan said he was not sure.
“This is the stand taken by us during the meeting. We do not impose any restriction and the decision to join or not is up to the members themselves,” he added.
