Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) deputy president Salahuddin Ayub is of the opinion that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will resign before the 14th general election.
His prediction comes in response to the appointment of Najib’s cousin Hishammuddin Hussein as special functions minister.
Stating that he was “not at all surprised” with the appointment, Salahuddin believes that the security of the prime minister’s family will be among Najib’s top priorities after his resignation.
“Najib has no other choice but to trust his cousin in this,” he said in a statement today.
Citing problems plaguing Najib’s brainchild 1Malaysia Development Bhd, Salahuddin said the best way out for Najib was for him to resign and pave the way for a new leadership in Umno.
Citing the 11th general election, in which a “Mr Clean” (former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) led the Barisan Nasional coalition, Salahuddin therefore believes it would be a wise move for BN to make again.
“The possibility of Najib making way for Hishammuddin to become prime minister before the 14th general election is a reasonable political prediction.
“What’s important for Umno/BN is the continuation of power.”
NO WAY NAJIB WILL QUIT
Former senator Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor, on the other hand, has a different view on this matter.
Ezam is “very certain” that the second cabinet post for Hishammuddin would not see a transition of power but Najib would instead continue staying in power.
“I know Najib’s advisers who formulated this strategy. I was with them during Pak Lah’s (Abdullah’s) transition as prime minister. That was also their strategy,” Ezam said.
These advisers, he added, had never taken their oaths of office and therefore do not think that they have a responsibility to take for the country.
“Giving power and access to the country’s affairs to people who never took their oaths is a crime.
“The prime minister’s wife, too, never took an oath of office and all top government officials know her influence and access to the country’s institutions. This is also a crime.”
As such, Ezam believes that their aim was to only ensure that Najib remains and continues to stay in power.
“They only think about profiting and nothing about the country. This is the reason why Najib still wants to continue in power although the country is nearing destruction.
“He is surrounded by people who do not have a sense of responsibility for the country.
“I know who they are and when the time comes, they will be exposed to the rakyat,” added Ezam.
Najib last week sparked a slew of speculations after he announced an additional cabinet portfolio for his cousin, Hishammuddin.
Among them is that Najib was attempting to sideline his deputy, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and prepping Hishammuddin for the top post, or that he could be using his cousin to keep Zahid in check.
