KUALA LUMPUR – Who would have pegged Datuk Seri Najib Razak as being a Trekkie?
The prime minister today, via Facebook, shared an image of the Star Trek franchise’s latest captain, none other than Malaysia’s very own Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh.
Najib wrote: “Who’s following the new #StarTrekDiscovery series? Apart from our very own Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, what else do you see here that reminds you of Malaysia?”
In the image shared by Najib, Yeoh is seen sitting behind a desk in the pilot episode. Behind her are several items arranged on a shelf, one of which appears to be a ‘wayang kulit’ puppet.
The wayang kulit is a traditional shadow puppet art which has its cultural roots in Indonesia, as well as Malaysia.
Ipoh-born Yeoh plays Captain Philippa Georgiou, who helms the USS Shenzhou, in the new television series, Star Trek: Discovery.
The pilot episode aired on Sunday in the United States.
