TEMERLOH: Despite having a tight schedule, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor today spent time to visit the houses of two victims of the big flood in the district in 2014.

For one of the victims involved, Hasmah Ibrahim, 74, the willingness of the prime minister and his wife to enquire about their well-being reflected his stature as a leader who is concerned with the lot of the people despite his many other more important duties.

I feel overwhelmed and happy..I did t expect the prime minister and his wife to come down and visit our houses and see for themselves the process of repairing this house, she told Bernama when met here today.

Hasmah, who is a single mother and is staying there with her three children and a grandchild, said in the flood disaster three years ago, her house was unLder water for almost two weeks forcing her family to move to the relief centre at SK Kampung Tengah.

She said the all the items in the house and the floor of the house were damaged due to being underwater for a prolonged period but had yet to be repaired due to financial constraints.

We have to step carefully in the house to avoid stepping on rotten wood especially at night, but thank God the presence of the prime minister brings good tidings through the Jom Bantu Rakyat programme today, she said.

Through the programme, the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Civil Defence Force (APM), Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) and other agencies got together to repair Hasmah s house. in fact, both Najib and Rosmah also pitched in to help paint the house.

Meanwhile, the other victim, A. Ghani A. Rahman, 79, and his wife Semah Mat Satin, 68, from Kampung Baru Padang Kerbau also shared their happiness at the presence of the prime minister after a life of abject deprivation following the floods which destroyed all their household belongings.

Indeed, the floods were very bad here in 2014 as water rose to the roof. All the household items were either swept away by floodwaters or damaged. With the help of the prime minister, we now have a sofa , rubber mats, fans and other household furniture such as cupboards for our clothes and racks for our plates and cups.

In addition, the Fire and Rescue Department is also building our new toilets. I am very thankful to our prime minister, he said.

Earlier, in a separate ceremony at the Temerloh District mosque, Najib also a RM10.2 million federal allocation for disbursement of monthly aid to 2,795 poor recipients in the district.

Of the tota,l 1,229 recipients were senior citizens followed by children (608) and the handicapped (955).

Najib, who also performed the Zohor prayers with 500 surrounding residents, handed over living allowances of RM252,000 to 105 inland fishermen in the district and RM14,700 to 49 storm victims in Taman Murni, Lanchang here last Friday.
