PERMATANG PAUH – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor arrived at Kampung Tanjung Putus here which is still inundated by floodwaters.
Najib, who arrived at about noon, spent 10 minutes meeting with villagers and distributing aid to almost 20 flood victims who are among 100 people who have taken shelter at the Tanjung Putus surau since day one of the disaster.
The Prime Minister and his entourage waded through knee-high water to get to the surau.
The villagers were forced to flee their homes when the nearby river burst its banks on Sunday.
Najib also dropped in on Sekolah Agama Al-Ridzuan at 12.30pm to visit with the 200 flood victims housed at the school.
Also present were Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan
Azizah Wan Ismail, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Umno welfare bureau chairman Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, as well as the State Federal Action Council chairman Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman.
The visit is part of Najib’s official tour of the flood-stricken state following a downpour and gale-force winds which battered the state beginning 2pm on Saturday, leading to catastrophic flooding.
The Prime Minister is expected to hold a press conference at the Masjid Jamek Nyior Sebatang at Sungai Dua this afternoon.
The northern region is bracing for a possible second wave of floods as the Meteorological Department has forecast downpours for the next seven days.
