Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia has set up the United Kingdom chapter of the Bunga Raya Club, a club consisting of Malaysians in the UK.
The hibiscus, the country’s national flower, is a symbol used in Bersatu’s logo.
A statement from the UK Bunga Raya Club president A Aziz Azizam confirmed that a pre-launch of the UK Bunga Raya Club was held on Sunday.
The launch was held to kick-start programmes involving welfare and social work for Malaysians in the UK.
Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir was present to officially open the event.
Among the UK chapter’s main objectives is to eliminate the culture of politics of hatred among Malaysian students and Malaysian nationals in the UK.
It is apparent then, how Malaysian politics in the UK are able to rise above the usual politicking.
The statement claimed that among those who attended the programme had included representatives from various political clubs in the UK including the UK Umno Club as well as UK Amanah Club.
Despite its name, however, the UK Umno Club maintains that it is apolitical, as stated on its website.
This could be the reason why UK Bunga Raya Club’s coming activities for this year will likewise focus more on conducting intellectual programmes in the form of dialogues and coffee talks.
Bersatu, an Umno splinter party, was formed by former party stalwarts Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Mukhriz and Muhyiddin along with other ex-Umno members.
Former Umno president Mahathir quit the party while Mukhriz and Muhyiddin, who was Umno number two, were expelled.
It has since agreed to an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan to ensure straight fights against Barisan Nasional in the next general election.
