DR Mahathir Mohamad wants Bersatu grassroots leaders to step up the campaign against the Najib administration by telling Malaysians the country will be destroyed if the present government continues to rule.

In a closed-door meeting with Bersatu information chiefs and their deputies over the weekend, party chairman Dr Mahathir said this message must be drummed into all Malaysians right up until the national polls.

“This leader (Najib) has embezzled billions of ringgit and has tarnished the country’s image.

“If we lose (GE14), Malaysians will have a bad future because Najib will destroy the country,”  he said, referring to Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Dr Mahathir told the grassroots leaders they should stop focusing on trivial issues that might distract them but instead explain to the people why Najib should be removed.

He then listed down the issues they should take to the ground, starting with the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal and the RM2.6 billion channelled into Najib’s bank accounts.

“A few issues can be played up, such as 1MDB, the amount of cash he (Najib) has in his accounts, the issue of him giving funds to the United States to help them.

“This is the first in history where a poor country is trying to help a rich country,” he said, referring to Najib’s three-day visit to the United States last month where he offered to invest billions of ringgit in the American economy.

He said the international media have called Najib “the crooked Malaysian prime minister” and many issues regarding him can be used to highlight his wrongdoings.

International media took pot shots at Najib’s historic meeting with US President Donald Trump last month in a stark contrast to the local media’s positive report on the meeting.

“These are all issues that can be used. It is up to us to tell the people.

“A lot has already been written in the alternative media. There are a lot of materials we can use to bring him down,”   added Dr Mahathir.

The former prime minister, who has been active in politics for 60 years, said he had never seen so many issues facing the government ahead of national elections.

“I have been involved in the country’s politics for such a long time and there has never been a general election where so many issues are being raised,” he told the grassroots leaders.

With the kleptocracy ceramah now officially over, the Bersatu grassroots leaders were told to take it upon themselves to inform the public the dangers the current government poses.

The opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan’s three-month anti-kleptocracy nationwide ceramah and roadshow, which ended last night in Klang, were aimed at breaking down and explaining the 1MDB scandal.

The PH leadership took charge of the ceramah which covered rural and urban areas nationwide.

DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua, a regular speaker at the 1MDB roadshow, was also present at the Bersatu meeting to show the information chiefs his slides, detailing how the 1MDB money was allegedly stolen.

“As the party’s information chiefs, you should know how to disseminate this information to the people,” said Dr Mahathir, who is also the PH chairman.
