MAHATHIR: BERSATU TO JOIN PAKATAN BUT WANTS ‘NEW NAME, SINGLE LOGO, MANIFESTO’, ALSO DOOR STILL OPEN TO PAS

PETALING JAYA – Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) will make a formal request to join Pakatan Harapan but it also wants the coalition to be “rebranded” as a single entity.

Pribumi chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad  said this is part of their efforts to ensure straight fights against Barisan Nasional in the next general election.

The former prime minister said Pribumi will suggest “a more suitable name” for the coalition to be under one symbol and one election manifesto.

“Other than a new name, we also want to have a new logo and a symbol for the election, as well as a manifesto,” he told reporters after chairing a Pribumi supreme council meeting here Tuesday.

Pakatan Harapan is currently made up of DAP, PKR and Amanah.

He added that Pribumi also proposed that only one candidate is fielded in each constituency to represent this coalition.

Asked whether this would prevent overlapping seats among the component parties, Dr Mahathir said he is confident that the new strategy would work.

“I am sure they (Pakatan member parties) will agree to this. One of the reasons they lost in the last election was because they failed to unite under one symbol,” he said.

On seat distribution, he said this has yet to be decided as Pribumi is not officially part of Pakatan.

On its cooperation with PAS, Dr Mahathir said Pribumi is open to forging political ties with any party, and not just the Islamist party.
