YONG PENG – It is too early for MCA to announce names of candidates or seats the party will contest in for the coming general election (GE14), said deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
He said the party would instead focus on strengthening its machinery to face the challenges of GE14.
“Our target is to ensure that our candidates win in the seats that traditionally belong to MCA,” Dr Wee, who is also Ayer Hitam MP, told reporters at the Ayer Hitam MCA Chinese New Year open house at SJKC Yong Peng 1 here on Tuesday.
Some 40 parliamentary and 90 state seats nationwide are traditionally MCA seats.
Dr Wee said all 191 MCA divisions and 4,000 branches nationwide have been told to start mobilising their election machinery and engaging with voters.
He said the divisions and branches would also give their full cooperation and assistance to Barisan Nasional candidates in areas which have 30% Chinese voters.
“We want to ensure that our Barisan candidates retain their seats or capture seats from the Opposition,” he said.
Dr Wee said the party was closely monitoring and assessing division leaders who have the criteria and ability to perform if they are chosen as candidates.
“The process is on-going including monitoring the performances of MCA appointed councillors,” he said.
