Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos and nine others have been arrested by police over alleged gang robbery.
Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmat said this was in relation to raids Jamal conducted on what he claimed to be gambling dens in Taman Kosas, Ampang on Dec 29.
“These places were licensed as family entertainment outlets, they had permits from the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ), but his claims that they were gambling dens are another matter.
“We received several reports that some people had lost their belongings during these raids, so that’s what we are investigating,” Fadzil told Malaysiakini.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery.
Jamal was arrested at his home in Ampang, and is now being held at the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters.
Fadzil said police will make an application in court tomorrow to remand him.
Jamal’s raids on alleged gambling dens were part of his campaign to highlight alleged failures by the opposition-led Selangor state government to curb illicit activities.
He had been warned by authorities and the police not to take the law into his own hands.
