Umno information chief Annuar Musa has praised Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for bringing about a transformation in diplomatic relations.
Describing it as “Najibplomatik”, he said the transformation has helped Malaysia establish positive diplomatic and trade ties with various countries.
He added, that this was significant in the context of developing the nation.
“Compared to the past, diplomatic relations were based on statements which were seen as popular for a personality, but not necessarily beneficial in terms of political relations between nations.
“We can see that in the past, Malaysia did not have warm diplomatic ties with Australia, Singapore, the United States, and even Saudi Arabia at one point.
“As a result of this, some countries viewed (Malaysia) negatively, especially from the viewpoint of trade and bilateral relations,” he told Umno Online.
However, Annuar said Najib has managed to alter this negative perception.
“Malaysia still maintains its non-aligned principle… which places Malaysia in the context of freedom and neutrality, but it is done through positive engagement.
“For example, Malaysia’s ties with the US… In Najib’s era, ties improved but it did not stop Malaysia from consolidating its relations with China even though China and US have some diplomatic issues between them,” he added.
Based on good relations established by the current administration, Annuar said the haj quota issue was resolved swiftly as well.
“Therefore, it is a huge achievement by Najib with regard to how he managed to transform diplomatic ties…
“This is crucial for economic development because economic development happens when there is investment,” he added.
