DR Mahathir Mohamad went for the jugular by hammering Najib Razak at the royal commission of inquiry. The former prime minister had kinder words for Bank Negara Malaysia’s former governor but reserved his disdain for the architect of the RCI – Najib.
This was because the prime minister was not dealing with allegations of kleptocracy in his government, Dr Mahathir said, also accusing Najib of using the RCI to distract Malaysians and to smear him.
He said BNM had already implemented measures, such as checks and balances, after the forex losses. The changes also include the amendment to the Malaysia Banking Act 2009.
“I wish to state that the main purpose the government requested the king to form the RCI is to put pressure on me, Anwar Ibrahim and the critics of Prime Minister Najib Razak in relation with the 1MDB criticism as well as other problems faced by the people and the country,” Dr Mahathir said when testifying before the RCItoday.
“In other words, the government intends to distract the attention of the people from the negative turmoil caused by the Najib Razak kleptocracy which has become the laughing stock of the world.
“From time to time, without answering specific questions – questions raised by myself, Najib Razak has raised all sorts of irrelevant issues in order to smear my credibility – just so that the Malaysian public are distracted from the turmoil caused by Najib Razak.”
Dr Mahathir said it had been 25 years since the forex losses occurred when “all of a sudden we have a testimony” by former BNM assistant governor Abdul Murad Khalid who alleged US$10 billion was lost by BNM.
“Following (Murad’s) statement, the deceitful intent of Najib Razak was exposed when he immediately stated that the cabinet would seek BNM’s opinion and ‘took a serious view on the matter’,” Dr Mahathir said, citing news reports.
He also said the appointment of former members of the special task force that recommended the RCI to the cabinet, Mohd Sidek Hassan and Saw Choo Boonto be commissioners of the RCI itself smacked of bias.
Dr Mahathir had filed for the recusal for Sidek, who chairs the RCI and Saw. The case is pending in the court of appeal.
He said the RCI members should make the “right recommendation without aiding or assisting Najib Razak to realise his evil intentions”.
