Saudi Arabian King Salman Abdul Aziz Al Saud’s silence on the RM2.6 billion donation has been exploited by both supporters and detractors of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
The premier’s supporters argued that the monarch would not have set foot on Malaysian soil or remain silent if Najib’s claim of the collosal sum being a donation from a Saudi royalty was fraudulent.
On Wednesday, Lim Kit Siang argued that King Salman’s silence on the matter during his four-day visit to Malaysia was a grave blow for Najib.
“The Saudi silence during the recent visit of King Salman to Malaysia, refusing to declare that the donation came from Saudi royal family, is loud and resounding.
“But the Saudi silence is most ominous and a grave blow to the integrity of the prime minister and good governance in Malaysia,” he had said.
However, Ampang Umno division leader Ismail Kijo described the DAP veteran’s remark as the latter’s most “dungu” (idiotic) to date.
According to him, Lim was desperate because King Salman’s visit had put an end to the opposition’s allegation that the RM2.6 billion was from 1MDB.
“I consider this as the most ‘dungu’ statement I have heard from Lim. Does he think King Salman is as stupid as the opposition to dicuss in the open about personal funds given to Islamic leaders to develop and strengthen Islam.
“Furthermore, the RM2.6 billion issue was long settled when Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al Jubeir verified Najib’s claim that the money was from Saudi royalty.
“So there is no reason for King Salman to comment on the matter just because the opposition raised it. There are more important matters to be discussed with regard to bilateral ties and investment,” he told Umno Online.
Ismail said not only did the Saudi monarch visit Malaysia, he had also agreed to invest RM37 billion in the Rapid project in Pengerang.
“He (King Salman) also agreeed to increase the haj quota for Malaysia by 30,000 pilgrims and announced cooperation in various fields, such as education scholarships.
“This is what the opposition fears. They worked hard to influence the people that the RM2.6 billion came from 1MDB, but King Salman’s presence demolished the slander.
“So the opposition is in a state of disarray to the point that Lim must come up with such a stupid statement,” he added.
