HOTBED OF POLITICAL INTRIGUE & BACKSTABBING: PKR DENIES ENDORSING DR M AS PAKATAN CHAIRMAN

KUALA LUMPUR – PKR denied today a report claiming that its political bureau has agreed to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad becoming Pakatan Harapan chairman, saying that no decision had been made yet.

PKR leaders told Malay Mail Online that several scenarios were presented during the political bureau meeting last night, including a proposal with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Dr Mahathir as coalition chairman, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as Pakatan Harapan president and PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as adviser.

These scenarios will be presented to Pakatan Harapan component parties for deliberation before a decision will be made by the pact’s presidential council.

“I was there at the meeting. The Malaysian Insight news is inaccurate as we are still in discussions, both within party and PH partners, and the decision will be conveyed officially via the presidential council,” PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil told Malay Mail Online.

Citing a source, the news portal reported that PKR had agreed to Dr Mahathir as Pakatan Harapan chairman, Dr Wan Azizah as president and Anwar as adviser.

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli echoed Fahmi’s remarks, saying that he had discussed what had happened during last night’s meeting with Dr Wan Azizah and PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar.

SING“I think what was leaked out was a half-truth. I wasn’t there but I discussed what happened with the president and (Nurul) Izzah.

“The discussion explored about scenarios where for example if we were to accept Dr Mahathir as chairman, Kak Wan as president, what are the conditions that are agreeable to all. There was a discussion on a scenario if PKR were to accept Dr M as chairman, the meeting discussed scenarios but no decision has been made,” he told Malay Mail Online.

PKR chief whip Datuk Johari Abdul said that proposals were put forth, but nothing had been finalised.

“Nothing was finalised, but we have options which are going to be discussed with Pakatan Harapan,” he said.

Last week, PPBM proposed that its chairman Dr Mahathir and president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin be appointed Pakatan Harapan’s chairman and president, with Anwar as adviser.

In PPBM’s proposal for the official Pakatan Harapan presidential council lineup, the less-than-a-year-old party suggested that Dr Wan Azizah be the Opposition pact’s deputy chair, PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali as Pakatan Harapan deputy president, and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Mohamad Sabu as the coalition’s vice presidents.

Pakatan Harapan’s initial proposal had placed Dr Wan Azizah as chair of the federal Opposition coalition, together with Muhyiddin, Mohamad and Lim as the vice chairmen.

PPBM only officially joined Pakatan Harapan in March. The coalition is planning to formally register with the Registrar of Societies (RoS), ahead of the 14th general election due by August next year.
