NILAI – The father of Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon passed away of old age on Thursday.
Chong Fatt Yuen, 89, died at his home here at 8.15am.
Fatt Yuen, who was born in Haoshan village, Guangdong province in China, is survived by his wife Leow Moi, seven children and 19 grandchildren.
Sin Woon, who is the youngest child, remembers his father, who ran a stationery shop, as a traditional man and a strict person.
“He used to cane us when we were naughty,” he recalled.
But Sin Woon and his siblings knew his father loved his children very much.
He said his father continued to live a simple life even when he was appointed deputy minister.
“After he retired, my father went to the streets to gather used cardboards and bottles for recycling.
“He, too, wanted to contribute to the environment,” added Sin Woon, who is MCA Youth chief.
The wake is held at the family home at 14, Jalan Besar Nilai until Saturday.
Fatt Yuen will be laid to rest at Nilai Memorial Park after the funeral at 11am on Sunday.
