PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail reiterated Pakatan Harapan’s preparedness to accept Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) into the coalition.
She welcomed Bersatu chairperson Mahathir Mohamad’s commitment to see his party eventually joining Harapan.
“I will sit with the leadership of Harapan parties to discuss efforts to strengthen this political union.
“I also invite Bersatu’s main leaders to sit and discuss strategies on a political union that can lead us to success in saving Malaysia from the current kleptocratic regime,” she said in a statement today.
Yesterday, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan claimed Bersatu leaders had confided in him that it was difficult to work with Harapan.
“In my meetings with Bersatu leaders, I was told that it is difficult for them to be with Harapan.
They give the impression that this is because they would be the most junior party in Harapan,” he had said.
Wan Azizah said Harapan was built as a united, progressive and strong political union which would be further strengthened with Bersatu.
“I believe Bersatu joining Harapan soon would strengthen this political union.
“It is important, not only in the face of the coming general election, but also to build a new Malaysia that we dream of,” she said.
Bersatu was to join Harapan in December last year but ended up only signing an electoral pact amid its attempts to court PAS to form a united opposition.
Since then, Bersatu and PAS have been engaged in seat negotiation discussions amid confused signals from the latter.
However, without concrete results from the discussions, Mahathir is now pushing for Bersatu to formally join Harapan.
