PARTI Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad lashed out at members who have used his name in an attempt to oust party president Muhyiddin Yassin.
The former premier said such efforts would only destablise Bersatu and enable Barisan Nasional, led Prime Minister Najib Razak, to win.
“Many say that I’m supporting their actions and have used my name to add credibility to their efforts. This includes a campaign to disrupt my plans to defeat the government led by Najib.
“Their actions only serves to distract Bersatu from defeating Najib,” Dr Mahathir wrote in his blog, chedet.cc today.
“They claim that their leaders are not good and don’t have the support of members. This is apparently caused by a ‘certain’ leader. Now, this has gone to the highest level of leadership in the party.
“They claim that Muhyiddin should be ousted as president because he’s using me for his personal interest,” he added.
The 92-year-old said the claims were wrong as Muhyiddin was the former deputy prime minister and was next in line to be the prime minister if Najib stood down.
“We all know how hard it is to convince former ministers to leave Umno, what more to join a party that opposes Umno.
“For him and Shafie Apdal, to allow themselves to be kicked out of their positions was a huge sacrifice.
“And, while many others who have lost their positions have distanced themselves from me, Muhyiddin joined me to form Bersatu and asked me to become the chairman,” said Dr Mahathir.
Bersatu would break up if Muhyiddin was ousted and any effort to win the next general election would fail, he added.
Dr Mahathir, who ruled from 1981-2003, said those who wanted to oust Muhyiddin sought to break up Bersatu.
“They want to see me fail and Najib succeed. These people who say they support me are actually my enemies and in essence work for Najib.
“These people should be sacked if they persist in doing this. There is no room for Najib supporters in Bersatu,” said Dr Mahathir.
It was reported yesterday that Bersatu’s Ipoh Timur division chief sponsor Azrul Suhadi Ahmad Mokhtar had asked for Muhyiddin’s resignation for failing to carry out his duties.
Azrul also alleged that Muhyiddin was using Dr Mahathir to place his cronies in top party positions.
Perak Bersatu has denied that its members had called for Muhyiddins resignation, according to a Bernama report today.
