DOES PAS BELONG TO HADI? WHY SHOULD I LEAVE – MAHFUZ QUASHES TALK OF JOINING AMANAH, BERSATU OR PKR

KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Mahfuz Omar disclosed today that he will never quit PAS despite being persistently at loggerheads with its leadership.

The second-term Pokok Sena MP told Malay daily Sinar Harian that for all his criticism of his party, he will not join any of the other political parties now available, including PAS splinter Parti Amanah Negara, Bumiputera-only Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) and PKR.

“I want to stay here. I won’t go anywhere, including Bersatu, PKR or Amanah. I only want to be in PAS.

“I want to prove that it isn’t wrong for us to have different political views from the party. We don’t have to leave the party and are still free to voice our views,” he was quoted saying.

Mahfuz had previously expressed a desire to contest in the 14th general elections as a direct candidate under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Opposition pact that excludes PAS.

He expanded on his belief today that only the PH pact can change the national political landscape.

“We cannot count on PAS which is only targeting 44 seats in the next GE.

“Even if all 44 seats are won, they cannot rule the country,” he told the newspaper, adding that PAS would likely only secure a small number of parliamentary seats as long as it continues to “sulk” at PH.

PH comprises Amanah, PPBM, PKR and the Chinese-majority DAP.

PAS has formed its own “third bloc” with lesser known political parties after a major fallout with DAP and PKR, resulting in the breakup of their three-party alliance known as Pakatan Rakyat in 2015.
