Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia claimed an Umno state assemblyperson in Johor may soon defect to the Umno splinter party.
Batu Pahat Bersatu chief Mohd Zaid Mohd Yusof, when contacted, said he had met with the Umno state assemblyperson to discuss the matter.
“There are signs that he is interested in joining Bersatu as he is facing pressure from those who are trying to wrest his position,” he told Malaysiakini.
Malaysiakini understands the Umno assemblyperson is upset at plans by Johor BN to drop him from the next general election.
Mohd Zaid said discussions on the possible defection was done throughout last week at Bukit Perdana, Batu Pahat.
However, it is unclear if the Umno state assemblyperson will follow through.
Malaysiakini had contacted the state assemblyperson who had yet to respond to queries.
If the defection happens, it will be the second Umno state assemblyperson to join Bersatu in Johor.
Shahruddin’s defection to Bersatu meant his Umno membership was automatically revoked.
The move was a coup by Bersatu as it also caused BN to lose its two-thirds majority in Johor state assembly.
The opposition, including Bersatu, presently controls 19 seats in the 56-member House.
