KUALA LUMPUR – Police have obtained a remand extension for an aquatics coach detained over an allegation that he raped a national diving athlete here last week.
City police Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Rusdi Mohd Isa said the coach will be remanded until Wednesday.
“(The court) has granted five (days’ remand), until Oct 11,” he said.
The 35-year-old coach is alleged to have raped the underage diver on Sept 26 at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil.
“The victim lodged a report on Sunday in fear for her own safety,” Rusdi said in a statement.
The coach, originally from China, was arrested the following day.
The accused has been working in the country for over five years. He is said to be married to a Malaysian and has permanent resident status.
This is the first major allegation of sexual abuse among the Malaysian sporting fraternity in more than two decades.
