Mukhriz Mahathir has instructed his lawyers to act against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for claiming former Dr Mahathir Mohamad is trying to install his son, Mukhriz as PM.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) deputy president said he was “disgusted” that Najib would sink so low, especially in the lead-up to the court hearing of Mukhriz’s defamation suit hearing against Najib’s press secretary Tengku Sariffuddin Ahmad.
“I find it very disappointing and am utterly disgusted by the fact that a person holding the highest position of authority in Malaysia can stoop so low as to take such desperate measures…
“(This) in my opinion is the clearest example of interference and exertion of unlawful pressure onto the court in that court action of mine.
“I have instructed my lawyers to take all and every necessary step available in law to correct this wrong committed by Najib,” he said in a statement.
The defamation suit against Tengku Sariffuddin will be heard on July 13.
Mukhriz and then deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin were sacked from Umno for allegedly being critical of party leadership.
Along with Mahathir, a former prime minister and Umno president, they formed Bersatu with other former Umno members.
Mahathir has been Najib’s biggest critic, primarily lambasting the PM over the 1MDB matter.
