KUALA LUMPUR – Police will beef up protection for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic) if there is a threat against him, says Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
The Inspector-General of Police said the Special Action Unit (UTK) protection detail for the former premier, which had been scaled down recently, would be increased if there was a security threat.
“This depends on the threat. If we feel there it is serious then we will beef up. We will provide the necessary security,” Fuzi told reporters during a visit at the Briged Tengah PGA Cheras here.
“Currently, his wife (Tun Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali) has been provided with a female officer and we also monitor his house.
The Prime Minister’s Department said in a statement on Thursday that all former prime ministers are being provided the same privileges and that Dr Mahathir is treated no differently.
The statement also said that the Government had not revoked any facility to any former prime minister, including Dr Mahathir.
Dr Mahathir had posted on his Facebook page that his UTK police bodyguards had been withdrawn.
The personal bodyguard service is a privilege provided to all former prime ministers.
On Nov 5, Fuzi had said the police were maintaining the UTK service for Dr Mahathir.
