KUALA LUMPUR – PAS is the political foe of Umno in Kelantan, the latter said amid continued speculation that the two parties would work together for the next general election.
Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the “reality” was that the federal opposition parties of PAS, PKR, Amanah and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) are Umno’s political enemies.
“Our enemy in Kelantan is PAS,” he was quoted saying by local daily The Star.
Explaining the declaration of PAS as a political foe, Mustapa noted that many leaders from PAS — which rules Kelantan — continue to criticise the federal government and the prime minister.
“That is why we have issued the order, declaring political rivalry,” he said, also affirming that the two parties remain political foes despite Umno being able to work with PAS on religious issues.
Mustapa said Umno is making early preparations to take over Kelantan from PAS in the 14th general election.
Despite being on opposite sides of the political divide, leaders from PAS and Umno have in recent months worked together on issues that are aimed at appealing to both parties’ key vote base of the Malay-Muslim community.
In yet another rare show of overt cooperation by PAS and Umno that was last seen in their joint solidarity rally for the Rohingya last December, Umno’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom spoke at a February 18 rally led by PAS.
Like the December rally for the Muslim Rohingya community, the PAS-led rally was also seen as having a religious tinge as it pushed for the amendment of laws to allow Shariah courts to impose heavier punishments.
