Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar is unfazed by her predecessor Shahrizat Abdul Jalil’s claims that she is “afraid” to defend the seat for a third term.
Instead, she challenged Shahrizat to a rematch to their 2008 contest, in which the then debutante Nurul Izzah deposed the Wanita Umno chief.
“I welcome Shahrizat to come contest in Lembah Pantai,” Nurul Izzah told Malaysiakini.
She also reiterated her stance that as Lembah Pantai MP, she would defend the seat unless PKR wanted her to contest elsewhere.
Shahrizat yesterday claimed to have heard that the PKR vice-president was afraid to defend the seat, and that former federal territories minister Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin would make a better candidate.
In response, Nurul Izzah questioned why, if Umno were so confident of their chances, Bukit Aman was being moved to Lembah Pantai in the current redelineation exercise.
The voters from the federal police headquarters, numbering about 6,500 in 2016, would be moved from the Segambut parliamentary constituency to Lembah Pantai if the redelineation exercise is enacted.
The move has been criticised as a move to steal Lembah Pantai, a marginal seat that Nurul Izzah won against Raja Nong Chik with a 1,847 vote majority in 2013.
She had won with a slightly better majority of 2,895 votes in her contest against Shahrizat in 2008.
