WONG Ching Yong, a SUPP leader in Sibu, suffered second-degree burns to 18% of the body in what was believed to be an acid attack yesterday.
The deputy chairman of Sarawak United People’s Party Dudong branch suffered burns to the face, chest and left arm in the attack at Lorong Tuanku Osman 4.
He was flown to Sarawak Hospital in Kuching for treatment at its burn ward.
The 58-year-old Wong, said he was about to get into his four-wheel drive vehicle after walking from his office nearby when he heard someone calling out his name.
He said as he turned to face the caller, some kind of liquid was thrown at him.
His assailant then ran to a waiting accomplice on a motorcycle to make their escape.
As he felt “burning sensation”, Wong rushed into the toilet of a bookstore nearby to wash off the acid.
A potential SUPP candidate for the Lanang parliamentary seat in the next general election, Wong said he was uncertain if the attack was linked to politics or an insolvency cases he was handling.
