EFFECTIVE tomorrow, Ismail Bakar is the secretary-general of Treasury, Finance Ministry.
Chief Secretary to the government Ali Hamsa announced the appointment today in a statement.
Ismail replaces Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah, whose contract will come to a premature end on Thursday. Irwan is among the top civil servants to be removed by the new Pakatan Harapan government, which has pledged to stamp out corruption and get to the bottom of the scandal surrounding 1Malaysia Development Bhd, where Irwan had been board chairman since 2012.
“I believe Ismail Bakar’s knowledge, experience and credibility will enable him to effectively carry out his responsibilities and uphold the vision of the Ministry of Finance as a strategic and financial leader to ensure sustainable growth for the benefit of the people and nation,” said Ali in the statement.
Ismail joined the administrative and diplomatic service in 1986 after 32 years in public service.
He has vast experience in economic and financial management as a result of service as the secretary-general of the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry; secretary-general of the Transport Ministry; budget director at the Finance Ministry; and senior adviser at World Bank headquarters in Washington DC, USA.
He holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honors) from Universiti Malaya, a Masters in Business Administration and a Doctorate from Hull University, UK.
