KOTA KINABALU – A 17-year-old was believed to have been raped by her two elder brothers in Papar, but when she told her mother, the latter brushed the matter off.
She then told her other sister about the alleged incest at about 2am on June 6, who helped her lodge a police report, leading to the arrest of the two suspects.
Papar police chief Deputy Supt Ladamah Sulaiman said the two suspects, aged in their early 20s, were believed to have been drunk during the alleged incident which occurred in the living room of their family house.
“According to the victim, she was sleeping in the living room when her brothers raped her,” he said during a press conference on Friday.
He said one of the brothers covered the victim’s mouth to prevent her from making a noise while the other took a scissors to cut her undergarments off before raping her.
DSP Ladamah said all of the other family members were sleeping in their rooms at that time.
He said according to the victim, it was not the first time the brothers sexually assaulted her as they had raped and molested her twice when she was 12.
“She told her mother about the incident then as well, but her mother did not take her words seriously,” he said.
DSP Ladamah said following the report, a team of police had gone to the victim’s house and seized a pair of scissors and some of the victim’s clothes to facilitate investigations.
The two brothers were detained and will be investigated for rape.
The older of the two was tested positive for drugs.
DSP Ladamah advised parents to listen and take action when their children inform them of a crime and go to them for help.
“Necessary safety precautions must be taken in the family to protect them from such incidents,” he added.
